How to Play at a Blackjack Table

You play Blackjack against the dealer and not the other players who are also playing individually against the dealer. Blackjack is usually played with 6 packs of 52 cards.

Like other “21” casino games such as Pontoon, the goal of Blackjack is for the total score of the player’s hand to be closer to 21 than that of the dealer’s hand but not over 21.

Blackjack Card Values

In Blackjack, aces count 11 or 1, picture cards (King, Queen, and Jack) count 10, and all other cards count their face value (the number on the card). If an Ace (original card value of 11) makes a hand over 21, then the player will typically change the Ace’s card value to 1.
Players place bets in the centre of the square box, usually corresponding to their Blackjack game table position.
Each player gets 2 cards face up and the dealer gets 1 card face up.

“Blackjack” is a special combination of cards and is ONLY achieved if the first 2 cards dealt score 21; this being an Ace and any 10 value card. Any other combination, even a total score of exactly 21 as well, loses to the “Blackjack” hand of an Ace and any 10 value card.
Players will be offered to take as many additional cards (known as “hitting”) as they wish until they think they have a hand with a total score closer to 21 than the dealer will achieve. Players can also pass their turns (known as “standing”) to avoid having a hand with a total score over 21 since this means they lose the game entirely (known as a “bust”).

Additionally, players have the following special options available after the first deal:
If the dealer’s face up card shows an Ace or a 10 value card and you have “Blackjack,” you can take insurance by betting half of your first bet. Taking insurance means you bet that the dealer has “Blackjack.”

If the dealer also has “Blackjack”, you win your insurance bet at the rate of 2:1 and stand off on your “Blackjack” hand. If the dealer does not have “Blackjack”, you lose your insurance bet but you get paid 3:2 for your “Blackjack.”
If your first 2 cards are the same EXCEPT for pairs of 4, 5, or 10’s, then you can split the first 2 cards into 2 different hands. To split, place the first 2 cards apart on the Blackjack game table and make an additional bet equal to your first bet. The dealer will then place an additional card on each of the first 2 cards, creating two hands to play with and bet on.

You can split any split hand on your next turn. The exact number of allowable splits will depend on the rules agreed upon with the dealer and the other players.

But if your first 2 cards are a pair of Aces, you can take only 1 more card. A SPLIT hand of an Ace and another card, with a total score of 21, does NOT count as “Blackjack.”
